Local councilor Omar Al-Rawi is appalled by the demolition of the oldest minaret in Basra and calls for the protection of cultural heritage for future generations.
Vienna (OTS / SPW-K) – “The cultural heritage of a country is an essential part of its identity and history. Historical sites are sources of knowledge and the common heritage of all people,” says Omar Al-Rawi, Vienna City Councilor. “It is our responsibility to protect and preserve these sites so that future generations can benefit from their beauty as well as their importance. We must take an active role in preserving and protecting our cultural heritage so that future generations can also remember and can also benefit from the history of the objects,” says Al-Rawi.
With shock and anger, Al-Rawi received the news that the governor of Basra had the city’s oldest minaret destroyed. The reason given was that the minaret stood in the way of the planned enlargement of a street. “The minaret of Al Siradji Mosque, erected in 1727, predates the United States by 94 years, Canada by 104 years, Australia and modern Iraq by 129 years. After 296 years, it was simply destroyed with an excavator,” explains Al-Rawi.
“Years ago, the so-called Islamic State (IS) in Mosul blew up the famous Al-Nuri Mosque and its distinctive leaning minaret, which was a landmark of the city. And now, in the south of the country, as the official authorities say, we are seeing another one destroy historic buildings,” says Al-Rawi. “This is a disgrace and a crime against cultural heritage. I am appalled and angry at this irresponsible and disrespectful act.” Al-Rawi expresses solidarity with the Iraqi people, especially the people of Basra, who mourn the loss of this important cultural heritage.
