His background, his reputation, his personal situation and his state of mind did not work in favor of Aleksandre*, a 49-year-old Georgian defendant. “It is clear that he ignores the laws and the authorities by persisting in not complying with the standards”, retained the prosecutor Jérémie Muller in his penal order.

Already given a suspended sentence twice in 2022 for minor thefts in the cantons of Vaud and Neuchâtel, Aleksandre has multiplied travel without a ticket on trains. Between January and March of this year, CFF controllers pinched the soon to be fifty-something thirty-seven times in a free-riding situation between Lausanne, Friborg and Yverdon-les-Bains (VD).

Unfavorably known to major distributors, the Georgian was banned from entering Coop for stealing goods worth 639 francs. Last spring, Aleksandre cracked down on a Migros store in Lausanne. He wanted to take pajamas, socks, shorts, nail clippers and a shirt worth 167 francs in total without checking out. He also tried to steal six bottles of Vodka from Manor.

Incarceration and fine

Recidivism situations convinced the prosecutor that only a custodial sentence would be a deterrent. He was sentenced to a firm sentence of four months in prison, from which one day of detention before trial must be deducted and a fine of 4,000 francs. If this fine is not paid, Aleksandr will spend an additional 40 days in prison.
