Schneider Electric has released three independent research studies on sustainability initiatives in IT and data center organizations, more specifically, where the IT and data center industries are at in achieving this vision of net zero emissions IT operations. The results of the studies, conducted by leading industry analysts, were presented for the first time in a broadcast entitled “The Future is Now: Preparing IT Infrastructure for Net Zero Operations”. ) and revealed a lack of sustainability actions.

451 Research, Forrester and Canalys independently collected data from more than 3,000 participants worldwide, including the largest colocation and cloud service providers, IT solution providers, and IT professionals across industries and organization sizes. Overall, the results consistently show that across the data center and IT industries, there is a discrepancy between where companies believe they are and implementing full lifecycle sustainability programs across their IT infrastructure.

According to 451 Research’s findings, in a survey of 1,100 IT professionals responsible for central and distributed IT, while 26% of respondents identified themselves as having a full lifecycle sustainability program that spans the entire infrastructure, only 14 % are taking the necessary steps to implement the programs. The analysis also identified that 22% do not address sustainability as their main focus, although they may have efficiency initiatives to improve specific areas of operations.

Schneider Electric hosted an event where company executives discussed Electricity 4.0 — a convergence of digital and electric, moving towards a sustainable future, the data center and the IT sector’s responsibility in dealing with the climate crisis. “Data centers play a key role in driving Electricity 4.0, which we believe is key to changing the trajectory of climate change. As an industry, we have a responsibility to deliver on our environmental commitments with extreme urgency. We’ve made some progress, but to avoid a major energy challenge, all data centers — including distributed edge data centers — must become more sustainable, efficient, adaptable and resilient,” says Pankaj Sharma, Executive Vice President, Energy Division Safe from Schneider Electric. “The research is clear — the industry knows that sustainability needs to be prioritized, but there are still challenges to be faced and it will take a collaborative effort to overcome them. The good news is that the technology to act for sustainability exists today. Now is the time to act.”
