Togolese President Faure Gnassingbé has carried out a reshuffle of his government, notably appointing a diplomat as Minister of Security, according to a decree.
No reason has been given for this reshuffle, which concerns eight ministries and comes as the country prepares for legislative and local elections, the date of which has not been announced, but which will be held this year according to President Gnassingbé.
Calixte Madjoulba, Togo’s ambassador to several countries, including France since 2010, replaces General Damehame Yark, who was Minister of Security and Protection since 2012, according to the decree announced Friday evening by state television. General Yark was appointed Minister of Water.
The Minister of Territorial Administration, Payadowa Boukpessi, one of the president’s loyalists, is replaced by Colonel Hodabalo Awate, current prefect of Agoe-Nyive, an area which covers six communes of Lomé.
The last legislative elections took place in 2018, boycotted by the main opposition parties who denounced “irregularities” in the electoral process.
Faure Gnassingbé came to power in 2005 after the death of his father, President Gnassingbe Eyadema, who had ruled the country for 38 years. He has since been re-elected after elections all denounced by the opposition.
