More than 2,500 needy residents of the Alytus district will receive the distribution of food products that began in April. In the country – more than 200 thousand.
This is already the second support this year for people who are struggling with food. Chief specialist of the Social Support Department (coordinator of inter-institutional cooperation) of the Alytus district municipal administration, Ernesta Matone, says that in February, 2,289 residents received food products: the most in Simno ward – 353, the least in Nemunaitis – 79.
“This time, it is planned to provide food products to more residents – 2,546: the most – 381 residents of Alytus and Simnos wards, the smallest – 81 beneficiaries living in Nemunaitis ward.
The distribution of food products is organized by the municipalities. The distribution takes place in 11 places: wards, except for Alytus ward – food products are given to its residents at the premises of the Red Cross in Alytus, Pramonės st. 31. Beneficiaries come to pick up food themselves. In exceptional cases, for example, to an elderly person who has difficulty walking and has no relatives who can take the food, the visiting care workers take it. Residents are informed about the exact time of distribution of food products”, noted E. Matone.
Food distribution is one of the forms of social support provided by the state. The Ministry of Social Security and Labor informs that the basket for the month of April for people who are struggling will consist of 10 different types of food products. There will be canned pork, 2 pcs. canned chicken, organic sugar, pasta, wheat flour, canned beets (in apple juice), organic canola oil, canned red beans, sweetened condensed milk and cookies. All support bags will be pre-packed and ready to go, so people don’t need to bring their own bags.
Support for food-poor residents will be distributed 4 more times this year: in June, August, October and December. Along with food products for the months of June and December, residents will also receive hygiene products.
The distribution of aid is organized by municipal administrations and two non-governmental organizations: the charity and support fund “Maisto bankas” and the Lithuanian Red Cross Society. In Alytus district – Lithuanian Red Cross Society.
Food support can be received by residents whose average monthly income per family member does not currently exceed 235.5 euros per month.
Alytus district municipality has decided to provide support to residents with higher incomes, but the income per family member must not exceed 345.4 euros per month, in the following cases: when the person has reached retirement age and lives alone; when the family raises three or more children; also – in cases of homelessness, crisis, serious illness, unemployment, after checking the living and household conditions of the person (family) and drawing up the act of checking the household and living conditions; when the person is disabled and lives alone, for asylum seekers transferred to the territory of the Republic of Lithuania; persons granted asylum, that is, foreigners who have been granted refugee status; for foreigners who have been granted additional protection.
