T1 is considered one of the most prestigious teams in LoL esports. They have won 10 championships in the domestic league ‘LoL Champions Korea (LCK)’ alone, and left a strong mark by winning 3 times in the ‘LoL World Championship (Roll Cup)’, which determines the best team in the world in a year. T1 players and coaches gain popularity worthy of this reputation, but on the other hand, they suffer greatly from the burden and pressure of their performance.
The standard for the commanding tower, who is the face of the team and is responsible for poor performance, is even stricter. In recent years, T1 has been reduced to a manager’s graveyard. After coach Kim Jeong-gyun (current national e-sports team coach), who had led the team as a coach and manager since 2013, resigned in the winter of 2019, four coaches went through T1 in just four years. In 2021, coach Dae-in Yang (currently Weibo Gaming) and coach Jae-min Lee, who led Damwon Kia (now Dplus Kia) to Worlds championship the previous year, took over the team, but they were also suddenly sacked during the season after a lot of controversy. In 2022, coach Seong-Hoon Choi stepped down as general manager after finishing runner-up in the summer season. He left the team in the winter.
The resignation relay continued this year as well. On the 8th, ahead of the Gen.G eSports match, T1 announced that coach Seong-Woong Bae had voluntarily resigned. Coach Bae, who is also the team’s legendary player, took over as acting manager last year and led the team to Worlds runner-up. However, they allowed a shocking upset in the spring season finals this year, and only advanced to the semifinals at the ‘Mid-Season Invitational (MSI)’, an international competition held in May.
On top of that, with Lee “Faker” Sang-hyeok recently leaving due to an injury, the low-ranking team DRX was allowed a blow, and the theory of responsibility grew. In the end, coach Bae felt responsible for his poor performance and announced his intention to resign.
T1 is currently in 3rd place in the league with 6 wins and 3 losses. It’s a compliant performance, but it’s hard to guarantee advances to the playoffs as Lee Sang-hyeok’s return period is undecided. If we lose against Gen.G today, we will drop to 4th place. However, there are also views that expect a miraculous rebound of T1.
