The majority in Wallonia has proposed a decree to reduce the taxation of motorhomes. This proposal was adopted on Monday in the Walloon parliament committee, competing with another text rejected by the centrists. The PS-MR-Ecolo majority proposes that the road tax should be set at a maximum of 40% of the current rate, and the registration tax should be a maximum of 35% of the established tariff. The adapted circulation tax will result in a median cost of €194 instead of the current €486, and the registration tax will drop from €1,614 to €565. This measure will take effect on January 1, 2022, and retroactive effect will be given to motorhome owners. The sector will benefit from fairer and more proportionate taxation, correcting the unfair tax ultimately. Though not a perfect solution, it considers all interests, including that of Walloon finance. Appeals may arise against the text as soon as it is promulgated.
This is a subject that will have caused a lot of ink to flow. The Walloon majority’s proposal for a decree to reduce the taxation of motorhomes – which exploded in the south of the country following the entry into force of the decree for a fairer tax – was finally adopted on Monday after- noon, in committee of the Walloon parliament.
It was in competition with a text from the Committed which was rejected despite the arguments defended tooth and nail by the centrists. The latter, like the PTB, abstained during the vote.
What will change?
Concretely, the proposal of the PS-MR-Ecolo majority provides that the road tax be set at a maximum of 40% of the rate currently in force. As for the registration tax, it will amount to a maximum of 35% of the tariff established in the contested decree.
The adapted circulation tax will thus make it possible to arrive at a median cost of 194 euros, against 486 euros for the moment. As for the registration tax, it will drop from 1,614 euros currently to 565 euros.
This measure taking effect from January 1, 2022, the holders of a motorhome will benefit from a retroactive effect, specified the majority.

“It’s not the most perfect solution, but it takes into account all the interests, including that of Walloon finance. We support the sector by correcting a tax that ultimately turned out to be unfair”, underlined, during the debates, the deputy Nicolas Tzanetatos (MR).
“It was important to propose fairer and more proportionate taxation. Both for motorhome owners but also for the whole sector”, added Socialist MP Joëlle Kapompole.
“It is not a perfect text but it was necessary to move forward and correct the excesses of the Crucke decree (Resigning Liberal minister who has since joined the ranks of the Committed, editor’s note)”, finally estimated, for Ecolo, the deputy Rodrigue Demeuse.
“We had a concrete text. But the majority prefers a compromise that is made on the back of the sector and in total legal uncertainty. I’ll give you a note that there will be appeals against this text as soon as it is promulgated”for his part, reacted the group leader of the Committed to the Walloon parliament, François Desquesnes.
