Retired Couple Discovers Property Dispute: Land Ownership Surprise in Saint-Malo

While wanting to make a donation to their children, a retired couple living in Saint-Malo (Ille-et-Vilaine) discovered that part of their property did not belong to them. They were warned by their notary, when the latter had just examined the cadastral documents of the municipality, reports The Malouin Country.

“We bought this house in 1988. Nobody told us anything at the time. We thought we were at peace, we were far from imagining that,” explains the owner, aged 84, to our colleagues. For thirty-six years, the couple had been unaware that two plots of land, inseparable from their garden and measuring 9 and 5 m2, were not in their name. This is a flower bed and an alley, passing under a bedroom window.

A decision submitted to the municipal council

In reality, the real owner of these plots is the City of Saint-Malo. The latter also does not explain how this mishap could have happened without anyone being aware of it. Since the couple has always maintained the plots “in good faith”, the municipality decided to transfer them to them during the municipal council meeting on February 15.

The plots should be sold for the sum of 200 euros. However, the couple will have to pay a little more. “We must also pay the surveyor’s fees (900 euros) and notarial deed fees (1,000 euros),” continues the owner. After that, the entire property will belong to the couple who will finally be able to conclude their donation-sharing project.
