Review of ‘Thúsblaze’ by Tryater: “But the corps remains!”

The performances of ‘Thúsblaze’ do not take place in theaters or village centres, but simply in people’s homes for the occasion. Spread throughout the province. For the thirty or forty people who have purchased a ticket for this evening – ticket sales are going like clockwork – it remains a surprise what and who they will see.

Tryater has chosen a somewhat playful way to present the various main characters from the big final performance. That is to say, a different character comes into the spotlight each time in all the different locations.

That could be Brecht Wassenaar himself, who as Carmen will reveal just a little more about himself than in the first performance. Recently divorced, she wonders whether she can actually be a good mother to her children. But her role as daughter is also scrutinized. And what about her own future with the force?

But we can also deal with the impulsive John-Douwe, played by Lourens van den Akker. He is considering playing the trumpet again to control his anger and tantrums.

Actress Eva Meijering can also make her entrance as the brand new chairman of the corps, who is completely thrown off by the new conductor. And then Joop Wittermans can still make an appearance. He plays the role of the old euphonium player Rinse, Carmen’s father, who has been fanatically playing with the fanfare for fifty years. But now faces a nasty dilemma.
