The small Saint-Lazare communal nursery school, located opposite the neighborhood church, along the Chaussée de Lille, closed its doors permanently in October 2021. Thousands of children from the suburbs of Lille and Tournaisis had passed there. over the past decades. We have just learned that the school building as well as the house located along the road, properties of the City of Tournai, will keep a school assignment: they will be in the future occupied by the Western Hainaut school service ( SAS-HO) on the basis of a rental agreement (with a view to an emphyteutic lease).
The non-profit organization welcomes an ever-increasing number of young people aged 12 to 18 from secondary education, all networks combined, who have dropped out of school, during the school year and on a voluntary basis. She was looking for a location that offers easy access by public transport, anchoring in the neighborhood, practical facilities according to her needs, etc.

Xavier Decaluwé, Ecolo councilor, was delighted Monday evening with the favorable vote for this point on the agenda of the municipal council. “Through its various individual and collective activities, this service aims to ensure the young person’s return to ‘ordinary’ education or training as soon as possible and in the best possible conditions. The SAS-HO thus enables young people who have dropped out the traditional framework of the school to take stock and develop a personal future project, all in partnership with families, schools and the entire network revolving around them”.
An expanded reception capacity
At present, the SAS-HO occupies premises on the Place de Lille. But these have become too cramped and poorly laid out to accommodate and supervise a group of about fifteen young people. Limited for security reasons, the reception capacity could be increased thanks to this move.
“Beyond the development of the offer of this service and its educational project, it is important to underline the symbolic maintenance of the school function of this place dear to many inhabitants of the Saint Lazare district. Partnerships already exist with the Port’ouverte youth center located a stone’s throw away, with the skill room in which young people play sports, and the SAS-HO is invested in the Vert Bocage field”.
A former secondary school teacher, Mr. Decaluwé can measure the importance of such a service. “I have seen the often disastrous consequences of dropping out of school. When we talk about dropping out of school, we obviously think first of all of the losses in learning. This is obviously important. But everyone is well aware that school is much more than a place of learning. It is also a place of life, education and socialization. A young person who is a school dropout is quickly dropped out with everything: with his acquaintances, his friends, his family. And everyone obviously measures the consequences that this can have.
