A revolutionary method of dealing with alcoholism was created by scientists from the US state of Ohio. Researchers at the local university medical center have developed the appropriate vaccine, writes Nature Medicine.
The drug was tested on monkeys. They were first hooked on alcohol, but then cured of cravings for alcohol. The animals were injected with the developed vaccine, and 90 percent of them ceased to be attracted to alcohol.
The drug affects the part of the brain responsible for the production of dopamine. In alcoholics, the synthesis of this hormone drops dramatically, which is why it is so difficult for them to give up alcohol that brings pleasure.
