A horrific residential fire in Richmond, California, has left a man and a young child dead, two other family members critically injured, and a 32-year-old relative facing multiple criminal charges, according to local authorities. Prosecutors in Contra Costa County and local law enforcement have identified the suspect as Sergio Ivan Rivera-Vega, who allegedly set the fatal blaze late Tuesday night.
The tragedy unfolded on 15th Street, just east of the Richmond City Center (CBS News). According to the Richmond Fire Department, the fatal incident was actually the second of two back-to-back fires on the same block within hours of each other, creating a chaotic and dangerous scene for emergency responders.
Timeline of the Two Back-to-Back Incidents
Richmond Fire Chief Aaron Osorio stated that the first fire was reported at a home just after 8 p.m. on Tuesday (CBS News). While fire crews were still on the scene mopping up and securing the area, nearby residents alerted them to a second fire breaking out just two doors away (CBS News).
The second incident quickly escalated into a three-alarm blaze, demanding additional personnel and equipment from surrounding fire crews (CBS News). All four victims were trapped inside the residence where the second fire ignited (CBS News). Richmond Police Chief Timothy Simmons noted that the suspicious circumstances surrounding the rapid development of the second fire prompted an immediate homicide and arson investigation (CBS News).
Victims and Suspect Details
Investigators confirmed that the suspect, Sergio Rivera Vega, was a resident of the home where the fatal fire occurred (CBS News). The fire claimed the lives of Rivera Vega’s 47-year-old father and his 5-year-old nephew (CBS News).
Two other family members sustained severe injuries in the blaze. A 33-year-old woman, identified as the suspect’s sister, and a 2-year-old niece were rushed to hospitals in critical condition (CBS News). “This is an absolute, unimaginable tragedy,” Chief Simmons said (CBS News). “It has taken the life of a man and a young child, while leaving a woman and another young child literally fighting for their lives” (CBS News).
Arrest and Legal Proceedings
As detectives gathered evidence at the scene, they located Rivera Vega nearby (CBS News). Police stated he was taken into custody safely without further incident (CBS News).

Rivera Vega has been formally booked on two counts of murder and two counts of arson causing grave bodily harm (CBS News). He is currently being held on a bail amount of $2.5 million (CBS News).
While investigators are treating the second fire as a targeted arson and homicide, authorities have noted that the first fire on the block remains under active investigation (CBS News). Richmond Police public information officer Lt. Joseph England indicated that investigators currently believe the two fires were isolated incidents, calling the timing “kind of a coincidence” (CBS News).
As the Contra Costa County judicial process moves forward, detectives are continuing to process forensic evidence from the 15th Street properties.
