This year, even bank charges have seen an increase. In fact, account maintenance fees, bank card fees and all others have increased from 2.5% to 3% on average from January 1, announces the CLCV association.

The biggest increase concerns small consumers

According to the CLCV, these are the “ small consumers » which have a basic set of services such as account maintenance fees and immediate debit card fees, as well as “ so-called average consumers » (two holders each with a card with loss and theft insurance, a bank check every 10 years, etc.) who are the most impacted by this increase. For these two categories, the increase is 2.97% and 3% respectively.

Thus, bank fees increase to 66.23 euros for small consumers, and 147.80 euros for average consumers. For their part, the “ large consumers » (holders with a Gold or Premier card, insurance against loss and theft or even numerous withdrawals) experienced an increase of 2.52%. Thus, their bank charges increase to 207.65 euros in 2024. According to the CLCV association, these increases “ are mainly due to changes in account maintenance fees (+3%), the cost of bank cards and the increase in package prices ».

Still according to the authors of the study, banks position themselves on higher fees for operations carried out in branches, “ which penalizes people who are not able to use online operations or less common operations », Estimates the association. In addition, the CLCV puts its finger on the “ changes made by certain establishments to the rules applicable to withdrawals from ATMs “. These modifications concern in particular the increase in the cost of withdrawals made in another network as well as the reduction in the number of free withdrawals moved. According to the French Banking Federation (FBF), the number of distributors fell by 12% between 2018 and 2022.

What about bank incident fees?

Regarding banking incident fees, the CLCV did not take them into account in its calculation of the average amounts. While according to the Panorabanques comparator, banking incidents represent on average a third of total banking fees. Last year, the annual average of overall banking fees (all types of consumers combined, with incident fees) was 220.60, indicates Panorabanques, an amount higher than that of “large consumers”. The CLCV also looked into the question. According to the association, the legal ceiling of the intervention commission is 8 euros and the check rejection costs of 50 euros (for a check of more than 50 euros) in the vast majority of banks.
