Rising Covid Cases in France: Recommendations for a Safe Holiday Season

Cases are increasing in France, favored by a particularly active variant. The health authorities call for vigilance and recommend the implementation of barrier gestures as the end-of-year holidays approach.

Covid is back. Contaminations are on the rise and their numbers could explode at Christmas and during the end-of-year holidays. 34,889 new positive cases were declared by medical biology laboratories between December 4 and 10. A number up 22.6% compared to the previous week.

Health Minister Aurélien Rousseau called on Wednesday for a rebound in vaccination against Covid and against the flu, to have a good holiday season and so that hospitals are not overwhelmed this winter.

Indeed, at the same time, other diseases persist. Guest on RMC, infectious disease specialist Benjamin Davido even talks about a quadruple epidemic as the holidays approach: bronchiolitis, flu, covid and mycoplasma.

“Today, it’s a quadruple epidemic”, Benjamin Davido, infectious disease specialist, speaks about the Covid epidemic one week before Christmas.

An increasing trend according to Public Health France

Santé Publique France observes an upward trend. The Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur region is the first region affected by the flu, placed in the epidemic phase. Public Health France calls for “caution”.

Eight others are classified in the “pre-epidemic” phase. The incidence rate rose to 51 cases per 100,000 inhabitants in seven days.

The incentive to vaccinate

Thus, several reasons can explain the increase in cases: the abandonment of barrier gestures, the appearance of the Omicron sub-variant, JN.1, the majority in France and particularly contagious.

“When we get vaccinated, particularly for Covid, we reduce the risk of contamination by two,” explains Benjamin Davido, infectious disease specialist on the Covid epidemic one week before Christmas.

In a context of family or friendly reunification for Christmas and the New Year, Public Health France invites as many people as possible to be vaccinated to “boost” their immunity and to apply barrier gestures on a daily basis.
