Rising Dengue Fever Cases in Brazil: What You Need to Know

Since the start of the year, 1.9 million cases of dengue fever have already been recorded in Brazil, the Brazilian Ministry of Health said on Thursday. The country has already beaten its record from 2015, a year during which around 1.6 million cases were recorded over the entire year.

So far, 656 dengue-related deaths have been confirmed in Brazil and another 1,025 are under investigation. The viral illness is often mild and not everyone infected becomes ill.

Dengue is prevalent in tropical and subtropical regions of South America, the Caribbean, Asia, Africa and Australia. The virus is transmitted by the yellow fever mosquito and the tiger mosquito.

The number of infections worldwide has increased rapidly in recent decades, particularly in urban areas. Heavy rainfall and high temperatures in recent months could be behind the increase. Under such conditions, the yellow fever mosquito develops particularly well. The tiger mosquito, for its part, has adapted well to urban environments.
