Rising Flag of the Rising Sun at Mt. Fuji Lodge Sparks Controversy

The Rising Sun Flag at Mount Fuji

A growing controversy surrounds the display of the Rising Sun flag at a local mountain shelter on Mount Fuji.

According to Seok's social media disclosure, a flagpole at a mountain shelter along Mount Fuji prominently featured the Rising Sun flag. For international visitors unfamiliar with history, the flag is frequently misconstrued as a Japanese symbol rather than what Seok describes as a symbol of militarism and imperialism used when Japan invaded various Asian countries, including during the Pacific War.

Unwitting Tourists and the Global Landmark

Mount Fuji is visited by many foreign tourists. Because many foreign tourists lack context regarding the banner, they often capture photos and videos alongside the flag without realizing its history.

The controversy extends beyond a simple flagpole display into the commercial ecosystem surrounding Mount Fuji tourism. Climbers traversing the mountain receive stamps at each shelter on wooden sticks, which are among the most popular souvenirs for visitors.

Commercial Souvenirs and Historical Grievances

However, the commercialization of these items has previously sparked criticism. According to Seok, overseas tourists purchase these popular mementos—which have featured the Rising Sun flag—unaware of the underlying historical grievances.

“Such a situation is nothing more than denying the war crimes and perpetrator history that they committed in the past,” Seok noted in his public statement.

Multilingual Video Campaigns Countering Imperial Symbols

To combat the normalization of the Rising Sun flag at the site, Seok is pivoting toward digital distribution strategies. Citing a continuous stream of reports and multimedia evidence submitted by South Korean tourists visiting the mountain, Seok announced plans to develop and distribute a comprehensive multilingual video.

The project will combine photographic and video evidence to highlight the problems of the “Mount Fuji Rising Sun flag.” By leveraging various online platforms, the campaign aims to reach international tourists visiting Mount Fuji, ensuring that visitors understand the historical weight behind the symbols encountered.
