Risk of Collapse at Mons Pedestrian Area Building: Updates and Analysis

Since early Thursday evening, the bottom of the Mons pedestrian area has been blocked at numbers 32 and 34 (opposite the old Club, a stone’s throw from the Passage du Centre).

“We noted a risk of collapse in the commercial maternity building which belongs to the City. The police and firefighters intervened and secured the perimeter,” said the City of Mons through its spokesperson. The City’s technical services were also on the scene.

Indeed, behind the white tarpaulin that covers the building under renovation, you can see rubble entangled in metal elements.

“At this stage, we do not know the reasons for this risk of collapse, but there is no material damage or injuries. No one had to be evacuated, no one lives there. »

For his part, Achille Sakas, acting mayor, wants to temper the concerns that such an intervention can cause: “There is no danger. It’s a preventative measure,” he said.

The contractor will be on site this Friday to analyze the situation and intervene as necessary.

As a reminder, the maternity project aims to create a commercial-type reception structure on the ground floor and housing on the upper floors in this building. The objective is to revitalize the city center of Mons.
