Skip-the-Line Program: Streamlined DMV Services in Illinois | Book Appointments and Eliminate Waiting Times

2023-07-27 21:52:35

The Illinois Secretary of State, Alexi Giannoulias, announced Thursday the implementation of the “Skip-the-Line” program with the purpose of improving customer service and waiting times at the offices of the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV, for its acronym in English).

This program will go into effect on September 1.

What does the Skip-the-Line program include?

Appointment scheduling: customers will need to make appointments for in-person visits at 44 of the busiest DMVs, including all suburban and Chicago locations and some central and downstate DMVs for those seeking REAL ID, driver’s license and services identification card, and for driving tests.

Those seeking vehicle-related services, such as title and registration processing or license plate decal renewal, do not need to make an appointment and can simply walk into any of the facilities.

Upon arrival, customers will check in with DMV staff and “skip the line,” eliminating unpredictable lines and wait times. Illinois residents can visit ilsos.gov or call (844) 817-4649 to schedule an appointment.

New extended hours: all DMVs across the state will have extended hours of operation, with 16 facilities that will be open six days a week, Monday through Saturday. All DMVs will change their days and hours of operation. Before it was from Tuesday to Saturday and now it will be from Monday to Friday, from 8 am to 5:30 pm A total of 16 DMV will also be open on Saturdays, from 8 am to 12:30 pm

Appointment-only facilities include 24 Chicago and suburban DMVs and 20 central and southern Illinois DMVs that are within 10 miles of a population center of at least 25,000 residents.
