In the sky of great electric music, gigantic stars shine that burn quickly, but also suns of lesser magnitude whose soft light warms souls forever. Jaime Robert Robertson, known as Robbie, belongs to the second category. Born in Toronto in 1943, he fell in love with rock’n’roll when he was 11 years old. Five years later, he plays guitar for Ronnie Hawkins, a Canadian rock pioneer, in the Hawks, a group featuring drummer Levon Helm, bassist Rick Danko and pianist Richard Manuel, soon joined by organist Garth Hudson, the only one classically trained and playing in church.
In 1965, while hanging out in New York, Robbie Robertson met Bob Dylan, folk superstar, artist with “high tension”, he specifies in Testimony, his autobiography. The current passes between the two musicians. Bob has on him the fresh acetate of Like A Rolling Stone. “Are you sure you want to listen to this? You’ve never heard of anything like it.” – “Bob was right”, recognizes the guitarist.
