Rockstar Workers to Vote on Union Recognition Ahead of GTA 6 Launch

Rockstar Workers Prepare for Historic Ballot Amid Grand Theft Auto VI Launch

Rockstar Games employees in the United Kingdom will vote between November 12 and November 26 on whether to officially recognize the Rockstar Games Workers Union. The ballot overlaps directly with the November 19 release of Grand Theft Auto VI on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. If successful, the union will become the largest recognized labor organization in the British video game industry.

The Independent Workers’ Union of Great Britain announced the voting window following months of negotiations with studio management. Shanti Easton-Steel, a member of the union committee, said the timing allows workers to make their voices heard while the public experiences the studio’s latest project. Workers will decide whether management must formally recognize the union and negotiate terms covering pay, bonuses, overtime, flexible work regimes, and generative artificial intelligence policies.

The Labor Dispute and Industrial Context

The IWGB initiated legal action after the studio let go of 31 employees in the UK, citing gross misconduct related to sharing confidential information on a Discord server. The union contested the firings as anti-union retaliation, while the company maintained the disciplinary action was unrelated to labor organizing.

Closing arguments for the tribunal are scheduled for November 17 and 18, just days before the launch of Grand Theft Auto VI. Jennifer Kolbe, head of publishing at Rockstar, addressed the union recognition possibility in a statement to Bloomberg, noting that management follows the team’s preference regarding representation. Alex Marshall, president of the IWGB, characterized the ballot as an event as significant as a major game release.

Financial Stakes for Take-Two Interactive

The commercial rollout of Grand Theft Auto VI carries high financial expectations for parent company Take-Two Interactive, which projected 8 billion dollars in revenue for the 2027 fiscal year. The company expects the title’s market performance to drive a substantial portion of those earnings. Meanwhile, union representatives stated that recognition would address long-standing concerns regarding workplace transparency, gender pay disparities, and fluctuating overtime policies.
