Following a season marked by injuries, Roger Federer has weighed in on the ATP Tour supremacy debate, identifying Jannik Sinner as the player who has had the strongest year ahead of rival Alexander Zverev.

The 2026 season has seen the professional men’s tennis hierarchy disrupted by Alexander Zverev’s incredible form. Coming into the campaign, Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz were seen as the two dominant forces of the sport. While he acknowledged the achievements of the German player and recognized that Alcaraz at his absolute best might be unmatched, Federer ultimately pointed to Sinner’s consistency and dominance.
“I mean, I’d say maybe it’s even Sinner, just because of the sheer dominance that he had in Masters 1000s. He played great until his injury. Now, what does the injury matter with his level of play? I think when he does show up, he’s been the best. That’s why also his ranking is right there.”

Fitness Struggles and Head-to-Head Realities
Before this season, Zverev was considered by many to be inferior to both Sinner and Alcaraz. The German had spent a longer career in the sport than both rivals yet had failed to capture a single Grand Slam title, which was the main reason for this perception. Both of the younger stars also led the German in the H2H record.
In fact, Zverev is yet to register a win over either of them in 2026. Over the course of the year, Sinner has beaten him five times, including in the championship matches at Wimbledon and the Madrid Open. During the semifinals of the Australian Open, Alcaraz also managed to defeat Zverev when they faced each other. Zverev’s losing streak against Sinner stretches back over three years, enduring a ten-match skid against the Italian.
Injuries have heavily impacted the race this year. Sinner suffered a knee injury that spoiled his entire US swing, forcing him to miss tournaments including the US Open entirely. Alcaraz faced even more significant time away, missing both the French Open and Wimbledon due to a wrist injury suffered in Barcelona that kept him sidelined for over four months. Meanwhile, Zverev has maintained a strong fitness level, participating in all the Grand Slams.
Rankings and the Pursuit of Number One
Despite his dismal record against his top rivals, Zverev’s two Grand Slam triumphs have changed the situation completely. He now stands at No. 2 in the rankings with 24 ATP titles and an Olympic gold medal to his name, holding a 4,130-point lead over Alcaraz. The gap to Sinner’s points tally of 11,500 stands at 1,810.
The only milestone that has consistently eluded the 29-year-old throughout his career is the No. 1 ranking. His brother, Mischa Zverev, recently expressed optimism in an interview with Sport1 that this lifetime goal remains achievable.

However, Mischa also sparked controversy by pointing to conditioning as a factor in the injuries plaguing Sinner and Alcaraz this season, stating that they faced fitness setbacks because they aren’t strong enough, push themselves too hard, or fail to rest when needed.

With Zverev cementing his status among his generation’s most successful players, attention now shifts to how the remaining months of the season will unfold. The upcoming Asian swing and the ATP Finals offer high-stakes opportunities for the top players to solidify their positions.
Federer noted that if a matchup were to happen right now, Zverev could easily be considered the man to beat, given that Carlos is coming back from injury and Sascha is riding high as a Grand Slam champion.
