In a brief press release published yesterday, the magazine “Rolling Stone” returned to the controversy surrounding the comments of its co-founder, Jann Wenner, in an interview with the “New York Times”, maintaining that his comments “do not represent” their values.
After the controversial remarks made by Jann Wenner, co-founder of the famous magazine Rolling Stonein an interview for the New York Times last weekend, the current editorial staff of the magazine published a press release to dissociate themselves from them.
As a reminder, Mr. Wenner was strongly criticized for having declared that “none” female artist he had met during his career at Rolling Stone was not “sufficiently eloquent” to deserve to be included in her new book, The Mastersbringing together conversations with artists – all white men – whom he considers “rock philosophers”. As for black artists, the 77-year-old said: “You know, Stevie Wonder, a genius, right? I guess the fault lies with using such a strong term as “masters”. Maybe Marvin Gaye or Curtis Mayfield? I mean they didn’t express themselves at that level.”
Comments unacceptable to the Rolling Stone today
These comments, deemed sexist and racist, quickly sparked a reaction and the magazine spoke out yesterday at the end of the day, disavowing its co-founder through a short press release posted on X (formerly Twitter). It reads: “Jann Wenner’s recent statements to New York Times do not represent the values and practices of the Rolling Stone of today. Jann Wenner has not been directly involved in our operations since 2019. Our focus, particularly since his departure, has been to tell stories that reflect the diversity of voices and experiences that shape our world. At the heart of Rolling Stonethere is the understanding that music can above all bring us together, and not divide us.”
Jann Wenner was ousted from the board of directors of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame foundation, where he served as chairman until 2020.
