Rotorua triple homicide: Man in court on assault charge

Police launched a triple homicide investigation in Rotorua after emergency services found a woman and two children dead at a Glenholme residential property. A man was located at the address and is assisting police with inquiries, and authorities confirmed they are not seeking anyone else in relation to the tragedy.

Emergency Response and the Glenholme Scene

Emergency services rushed to a residential address in the Rotorua suburb of Glenholme shortly before 10.30pm, according to reporting from the Rotorua Daily Post. Hato Hone St John confirmed the ambulance service was called at 10.26pm. Responders arrived to discover a woman suffering from life-threatening injuries alongside two young children dead at the address.

Despite extensive efforts by police and ambulance crews, the woman died at the scene. Bay of Plenty Acting District Commander Inspector Logan Marsh said the deaths of all three victims are being treated as homicides, and the circumstances remain under investigation.

Neighbours described a heavy law enforcement presence unfolding late into the night. One resident told the Rotorua Daily Post that she saw police everywhere about 10.30pm, including at least four police vehicles at a property and more parked further up the street, with officers using torches and loudly knocking on a house door. Another resident told Stuff she and her daughter were woken by police knocking on her door about 10.30pm, explaining that officers were searching everywhere, opening cupboards, and checking properties further down her driveway after a report that someone had been injured on her property.

Court Appearance and Police Custody

A man was also located at the address and is assisting police with inquiries.

During the court proceedings, Judge Greg Hollister-Jones granted interim name suppression to the man and three named people. He remanded the man in custody to reappear in court on October 2.

Police have emphasized that they are not seeking anyone else.

Forensic Investigations and Community Impact

Investigators spent the following day examining the Glenholme property. A Rotorua Daily Post reporter at the scene this morning observed multiple police officers at the property, with investigators taking measurements, placing markers, and flying a drone overhead, while Rotorua Daily Post reporter Annabel Reid noted that neighbours who saw police arrive have been looking on and discussing it on the street.

A scene guard remained in place overnight and police would be visible in the area. Marsh acknowledged the incredible efforts of the police and ambulance staff who responded to the extremely confronting scene and noted that support is being provided to the family of those involved and to their people.

Rotorua Mayor Tania Tapsell stated that the community was heartbroken to hear of the tragic loss, shared thoughts with the victims, their loved ones, and all those impacted as the investigation continues, and acknowledged emergency services and frontline staff who responded to the horrific tragedy.

Marsh said people would be understandably shaken and police would be carrying out additional reassurance patrols over the coming days and nights in Glenholme and the wider community, asking people to refrain from speculation or conjecture out of respect for the victims and their family.
