The NSF–DOE Vera C. Rubin Observatory has officially commenced its ten-year Legacy Survey of Space and Time in Chile, capturing the southern sky every few nights with a 3.2-gigapixel camera to build the most comprehensive cinematic record of the universe in history.

From a mountaintop perch under clear dark skies in Chile, astronomy has entered a cinematic new era. The NSF–DOE Vera C. Rubin Observatory has begun the revolutionary Legacy Survey of Space and Time, embarking on a decade-long signature campaign designed to compile an ultra-wide, high-definition time-lapse record of the entire southern sky.

Operated jointly as a U.S. government facility by NSF NOIRLab and the Department of Energy’s SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory, the observatory relies on an exceptional synthesis of wide-field optics and rapid motion. The resulting co-added image packs over half a million galaxies and more than 50,000 stars into a single expansive view. Spirals with delicate arms, smooth ellipticals, distorted mergers, and faint red distant galaxies crowd the frame, contrasted against only a sparse foreground of Milky Way stars.

Astronomers have scrutinized the COSMOS field for over two decades, beginning with Hubble Space Telescope observations in 2003. Because researchers have mapped the region across wavelengths from radio waves to X-rays, it serves as a crucial testing ground for new astronomical data.
