Used as a weapon by English soldiers in the Middle Ages then diverted from their primary function by an English carpenter in the 19th century, the darts quickly conquered the pubs until becoming the popular game we know today.

However, for those new to the subject, the rules and specificities of this sport in its own right often remain unclear. Sport Equipement therefore offers you a complete guide to (re)start on good foundations.

Choice of darts, target, official and unofficial rules, here is what you need to know to become a dart pro.

Basic vocabulary for beginner darts players

Bullseye ou Bull’s Eye : the part in the center of the target;
Chucker : designates a player who throws his darts without aiming;
Darts : the game of darts in English;
Dirty darts : resorting to a tactic considered dubious (reading darts for example);
Finish : score from which a player can finish a round;
Throw (volley) : thrown three successive darts at the target;
Minus : “double ace” or “double one”;
Perfect : finish a game with the minimum number of darts possible (9 darts for a 501, 6 darts for a 301);
Refusal : when the dart bounces on the target;
« Three in a bed » : when a player plants his three darts in the same area;
« Two fat ladies » : score 88 points in one round;
Wilson : designates a player who has missed his three throws.

The darts

Each dart consists of four parts:

The pointe : the pointed end of the dart that comes into contact with the target. It can be made of steel (for traditional targets) or plastic (for electronic targets). THE barrel : the body of the dart on which the thrower places his fingers; THE shaft : the rod at the back of the barrel which balances the dart; L’fin : the “rear” part which allows dynamic flotation.

There are many types of darts depending on the level of the players and the frequency of play. Here is a short guide to guide you in your choice:

Light barrel dart : easy to launch, it is perfect for beginners or for occasional fun.
Heavy and wide barrel dart : the more imposing body allows a better grip, ideal for working on throwing precision. Opt for this type of dart if you want to improve your game and practice regularly.
Heavy and thin barrel dart : the dart of the pros. Made of tungsten, its thinner shaft allows you to group your darts on the target to smash your score. It is the best choice for players looking for performance.

Don’t know where to buy your darts? The site hyperprotec.com offers a wide choice of models for novice or experienced players.

Target

A dartboard is divided into 21 sectors :

20 sectors numbered from 1 to 20 whose angle is 18°; The bullseye (center).

Each sector is itself divided into several parts of varying size :

The simple ones (single ring), most often white or black; Doubles (double ring) and triples (triple ring), most often red or green; The single bull’s eye, generally red; The Double Bull’s eye, generally black.

Darts thrown in the thinnest parts and/or closest to the center are those which earn the most points.

As with darts, the choice of target depends above all on the use you have for it.

Perfect for children, the electronic target prevents young people from getting hurt by steel spikes.

It also offers automatic point counting and displays each player’s score in real time.

The electronic target is therefore perfect for family use for fun purposes. There traditional target is played with steel tip darts.

It offers both a better gaming experience and more precision.

Casual players will opt for entry-level models, with a paper target and a diameter of 42 cm.

Regular throwers will prefer a straw target with a traditional diameter, more durable, stronger and more precise.

Setting up the dartboard

Were you thinking of taking advantage of an empty hook on your wall to install your brand new dartboard?

Not so fast, unfortunate!

The hanging of the target follows very precise rules, since the center of the target must be placed at 1.73 meters from the ground.

For the placement of players, you will also need to plan the installation of a block surélevé (« oche ») the 38 mm todaythe front of which must be fixed at a distance of 2.37 meters from the target.

Points counting

The number of points won after a shot depends on the sector in which the dart landed:

Simple : the dart counts once. For example, if you aimed in the simple sector of zone “12”, you earn 12 points.
Double (outer ring): your dart counts twice. You must therefore multiply the score indicated on the target by two.
Triple (inner ring): your dart counts three times. The area score must be multiplied by three.
Bull simple (outer center ring): 25 points
Bull double (centre) : 50 points.

The official rules of darts

501

The majority of matches played in professional tournament are 501. The rule is simple: each player has a total of points equivalent to 501.

Each player takes turns throwing 3 darts. The score for each end is subtracted from the 501 starting points. The first player to reach 0 wins the round. Two clarifications:

It is not possible to “go” below 0. If the total number of points won is greater than the remaining points, the round is canceled and the player must restart to reach precisely 0 points. The last dart must be thrown into a bullseye or double ring.

301

301 is the other form of game played in official competition.

The rules are identical, with the only difference being that the number of points awarded at the start is 301. Some tournaments also require players to start and end the game with a double.

The unofficial rules of the game of darts

In bars, with family or friends, official rules are rarely followed to the letter.

There are indeed many unofficial variations which turn out to be much more fun.

These variations can also be useful for training, progressing and varying the pleasures. Let us cite in particular:

The clock : place a dart in each single sector of the target, following the order of the numbers (1,2,3, etc. up to 20), before starting again in the double then triple sectors. The first to complete all segments wins the game.
Shanghai : try to place your darts in the same round in the single, double and triple sector of the same zone. The game begins with sector 1. In the event of failure of the players, the next end is played on zone two. Each thrower has 7 darts to attempt a Shanghai.
Le Count Up : succeed in scoring a maximum of points during a previously defined number of rounds.

To conclude

A friendly activity par excellence, darts is nonetheless a sport in its own right.
