Rumor: Development kits for the Nintendo Switch successor are on the way

2023-07-02 21:19:24

It will probably be a while before we get any concrete information on what the successor to the Nintendo Switch will offer.

The rumor of the day is about development kits and it’s interesting.

About three years ago, a leaker by the name of Nash Weedle on Twitter brought up rumors of the return of the Metroid series. He had heard that the project would be a new 2D Metroid, and suspected it might be Metroid Dread. As we all know by now, Metroid Dread has indeed made its way to the Nintendo Switch, so this leaker at least has some credibility.

And in 2023, the same leaker shared interesting information once again. According to him, at least one development kit for the successor to the Switch is available “in the wild”. The leaker claims that it was a Spanish studio that received the development kit.

You may remember that MercurySteam was the team that took care of Metroid Dread, and the studio happens to be located in Spain. There is no doubt that Nintendo wants to work with MercurySteam again, following the critical and commercial success of Metroid Dread. It wouldn’t be hard to believe that Nintendo would send them a dev kit for the successor to the Switch.

However, if they received the kit, considering the small team that is MercurySteam, other larger studios have already had it for a while. The release in early 2024 seems to be becoming clearer.
