Russell Brand convicted of rape and sexual assault at Southwark Crown Court

The Sun, Britain’s largest tabloid, recognized Russell Brand with a prominent accolade called “Shagger of the Year” across a trio of consecutive years while he held positions at BBC radio stations: Now, following his convictions for rape and sexual assault at Southwark Crown Court, that era of British media culture has drawn intense scrutiny over how employers enabled his behavior or chose to look away.

The 51-year-old comedian and media personality was found guilty on Thursday of one count of rape and three counts of sexual assault involving multiple women. Following deliberations that lasted approximately eight and a half hours, a panel consisting of eight men and four women acquitted him of one count of attempted indecent assault along with two separate rape charges, as noted by 1News.

Judge Joel Bennathan noted that the case was very well prepared, adding that sentencing would take place on Monday. Brand stood straight in the dock as the verdicts were delivered, closing his eyes as he heard he was found guilty of rape, and said “I love you” to his wife Laura Gallacher before entering the dock.

The convictions stem from offenses committed between 1999 and 2009. The Metropolitan Police stated that Brand “used his influence, status and fame to exploit and sexually offend against women,” noting that as his profile grew, his sense of entitlement did likewise. Detective Superintendent Andy Furphy praised the extraordinary courage and resilience of the women who came forward.

The fallout has turned a harsh spotlight back on the institutions that launched and sustained his career. The BBC apologised last year for a culture of silence that prevented staff from complaining about Brand’s behavior at its radio stations between 2006 and 2008 because employees felt he was too powerful. Of eight complaints the BBC investigated from that era, only one—concerning Brand urinating in a cup in front of staff—was made formally at the time, and the internal review found it was not dealt with effectively.

Longtime BBC radio DJ Liz Kershaw wrote in The Telegraph that she had complained since 2006 to management about Brand’s behavior, stating that he was a creation of powerful players in the media who were in his thrall.

Brand ultimately resigned from Radio 2 in 2008 after an on-air prank where he phoned actor Andrew Sachs and left a sexually explicit message regarding his granddaughter. Britain’s broadcast regulator hit the BBC with a record fine of 150,000 pounds, equivalent to $219,000 at the time.

Channel 4 has also faced accountability. The broadcaster apologised in 2024 to a former employee after an internal review found it had failed to investigate a serious complaint made against Brand in 2009. Brand was convicted of sexually assaulting that former employee while working on a project for the channel in 2009, after members of his entourage encouraged the victim to give him a massage and laughed as he assaulted her.

Media analysts and legal experts noted that Brand’s raunchy persona may have acted as a pre-emptive defense. Attorney Ann Olivarius observed that when Brand was at his most famous, his wrongdoings were indulged or ignored by employers and the public alike. Marketing consultant Allen Adamson noted that the media co-authored the persona, handing out trophies for promiscuity while building a brand that normalized boundary violations.

Meanwhile, the Metropolitan Police stated on Thursday that Brand is under active investigation for two further rape allegations, with detectives having sent files to specialist rape prosecutors. Prime Minister Andy Burnham told Times Radio that the government would examine calls from the victims’ commissioner for a legal duty requiring judges to issue directions to juries on rape myths and misconceptions.

Brand remains remanded in custody ahead of Monday’s sentencing, where he faces a significant custodial term.
