Actor and comedian Russell Brand faces an inevitable prison sentence after a London jury found him guilty of rape and three sexual assaults following a four-week trial at Southwark Crown Court.
The 51-year-old entertainer was remanded into custody by Judge Joel Bennathan, who told the court that the convictions would carry a significant custodial term, with sentencing scheduled for Monday (EFE).
Verdicts Delivered at Southwark Crown Court
A jury of eight men and four women deliberated for more than eight hours over two days before returning their verdicts (CBS News). Brand was found guilty of anally raping a 21-year-old fan after a 2009 stand-up performance at the Hammersmith Apollo (iNews).
During his career in entertainment, which began in the 1990s, Brand rose to become one of Britain’s most prominent comedians, hosting spin-off programmes for Big Brother alongside major event galas including the Brit Awards and the MTV Video Music Awards. His professional profile expanded further in the 2000s with roles across television and radio, including his own programme on BBC Radio 2, before publishing his bestselling memoir in 2008. The allegations brought against him during the legal proceedings spanned a ten-year period between 1999 and 2009, involving six women in total.
In addition to the rape conviction, the jury found Brand guilty of three separate counts of sexual assault spanning a five-year period. These included grabbing a woman’s breasts during a Soho bar party in the summer of 2004, sexually assaulting an employee at London radio station Choice FM in 2004 or 2005, and carrying out a forced massage against a Channel 4 worker in 2009 (EFE), (CBS News).
The panel acquitted Brand of two additional rape charges, an attempted indecent assault charge, and an allegation of oral rape stemming from the 2004 Soho bar incident (EFE), (CBS News), (iNews). Jurors also cleared him of a separate 1999 allegation involving a woman met during a Labour Party conference, as well as an accusation regarding an MTV employee in 2001.
Courtroom Reactions and Remand in Custody
Standing upright in the dock, Brand showed little emotion as the verdicts were read, closing his eyes specifically when the guilty verdict on the rape count was announced (EFE), (iNews). Just before the jury delivered its decisions, Brand looked toward his wife, Laura Gallacher, telling her he loved her and kissing a pendant around his neck. When defense requests for bail were denied, he gestured to his legal team and stated, I’m good, I’m good, I’m good,
before court security removed him (EFE), (CBS News).
You’ve been convicted of a number of offences including rape. The consequence of that is inevitably a significant custodial term.
Judge Joel Bennathan, Judge
Judge Joel Bennathan stated that the hardship to the children had been caused by serious criminal offending by their father.
Detectives Praise Complainants as Defense Argues Media Influence
Detectives from the Metropolitan Police emphasized the bravery of the complainants throughout the legal process (CBS News), (iNews). Defense lawyers during the proceedings argued that the complainants had been influenced by media reports and a joint journalistic investigation published in September 2023, while prosecutors maintained that the coverage simply provided the women with the impetus to share experiences that had troubled them for years.

Today’s verdict is first and foremost a testament to the extraordinary courage, resilience and determination of the women who came forward and reported what happened to them.
Superintendent Andy Furphy, Metropolitan Police
Superintendent Andy Furphy stated that Brand used his public standing to commit offenses (CBS News), (iNews).
As his profile grew, so too did his sense of entitlement. I hope this conviction sends a clear message that no one is above the law, no matter how famous or powerful they may be.
Superintendent Andy Furphy, Metropolitan Police
Following the conclusion of the trial, legal representatives and journalists intersected outside the courtroom, where Ian Winter KC addressed Rosamund Urwin over her investigation into the entertainer.
