MOSCOW: Russian anti-aircraft units have destroyed 19 Ukrainian drones that flew over the Black Sea and the Crimean peninsula and three Ukrainian drones that flew in other parts of Russia, the Defense Ministry said. The Ministry of Defense stated that the attempt of the Ukrainian government to carry out a terrorist attack using lethal drones in Russia from September 20 to 21 was prevented.

Three other drones crashed in the Kursk, Belgorod and Orlov regions of central and southern Russia, the ministry said. No details of casualties or damage were given. Ukraine has targeted Crimea throughout Russia’s invasion. In 2014, Russia annexed Crimea, which was under the control of Ukraine. But attacks there have intensified recently as Ukraine vows to retake territory captured by Russia in 2014. On August 25, Russia said it shot down 42 drones over Crimea. Since Ukraine launched its counteroffensive in early June, buildings in cities including Moscow have come under frequent drone attacks, but Russia has survived.

The Russian-backed governor of Sevastopol, Mikhail Razvoshaev, said several drones had been destroyed in Crimea’s largest region. Official information will come later, said Oleg Kryuchkov, adviser to Moscow Governor Sergey Aksyonov.
