A Russian drone strike hit the locomotive of a passenger train traveling from Kyiv to Warsaw just two kilometers from the Polish border on Sunday, forcing emergency evacuations.
Border Strikes Disrupt Rail Traffic and European Delegations
According to reports from Ukrainian authorities and Polish officials, the drone attack targeted the locomotive in the Volhynia region near the Dorohusk-Yagodyn border crossing, leaving the train undamaged by casualties but sparking intense regional security concerns. Polish Interior Minister Marcin Kierwinski stated that authorities were treating the incidents with the utmost seriousness, noting that a second drone struck near the border post itself. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky explicitly accused Moscow of deliberately orchestrating the strike against the train.
The disruption rippled across international transport links. According to the German magazine Der Spiegel, a separate special train carrying European diplomats, security advisors, and former British Prime Minister Boris Johnson was abruptly halted near the Polish frontier due to the attack. The delegation—which included representatives from Great Britain, France, Italy, and the German Bundestag returning from diplomatic talks in Kyiv regarding potential peace negotiations—faced temporary evacuation before receiving the all-clear to resume their journey.
Systemic Rail Targeting and Diplomatic Fallout
Ukrzaliznytsia, Ukraine’s railway company, warned that the country’s rail network is currently facing a coordinated, systemic offensive. The company placed its surveillance centers and personnel on high alert, cautioning passengers to anticipate significant delays and potential evacuations. Additional rail infrastructure in the central-western Vinnytsia region also sustained damage, while separate Russian strikes in Kramatorsk left at least two people dead.
Reacting to the border-zone explosions during a press conference in Kyiv, Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski denounced the assault as a clear escalation by Moscow. Sikorski emphasized that the strikes serve as a severe test for Ukraine and reinforce the urgent necessity of strengthening international support for the nation. Meanwhile, the Russian Ministry of Defence acknowledged targeting western Ukrainian railway infrastructure, claiming the lines were utilized to transport military cargo from Europe.
