Russian stores began to master the resale of used smartphones

Large Russian retail chains engaged in the sale of electronics began to actively develop the market for used gadgets. Previously, the purchase of smartphones was carried out mainly in accordance with trade-in programs, but recently we are talking about the direct resale of used goods.

As reported “businessman”, the large retailer Svyaznoy became the resale of used smartphones in cooperation with the Smart Bazar company controlled by MegaFon, and the Citilink network is also involved in the resale of the iPhone. Svyaznoy reports that back in March, the company began to implement the Used Equipment project, which allows you to buy smartphones from those who wish and resell them after verification. According to the company’s forecasts, the market for used smartphones reached 71 billion rubles last year alone, with about 7.5 million gadgets sold in total. The company believes that every Russian has an average of 2-2.5 devices that can be sold if necessary.

The Smart Bazar partner provides software for checking electronics and buys them, after which they go to service centers, and from there to stores. Unlike the common trade-in scheme, the client does not receive a discount on a new smartphone, but money. According to Svyaznoy’s statistics, for the first month of the project implementation, about 250 devices for 3 million rubles were redeemed daily – the average cost of the redemption was about 12 thousand rubles. In monetary terms, sales of used Smart Bazar smartphones increased by more than 4 times, and in piece terms, by more than 2 times.

According to the experts of Marvel Distribution, in the context of the suspension of the supply of electronics of familiar brands, the demand for commission electronics has increased markedly, while it is “not very expensive” for a retailer to maintain a service center for updating smartphones, and the resale market is quite profitable.

Experts expect that soon all retailers will sell used gadgets, and regional networks have already begun to occupy this niche. According to experts, first of all in the secondary market they acquire smartphones, computers, photo and video equipment. The demand for household appliances is not so pronounced – since during the official sale it will be necessary to provide a guarantee, the risks will be too high, the costs of hygienic treatment and “adjustment” of appearance are required, and the marginality of such equipment is low.
