At least 15 people were killed in a massive wave of Russian missile and drone strikes targeting Kyiv and its surrounding region, leaving scores injured, critical infrastructure damaged, and large areas without power, Ukrainian authorities reported.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed the mounting casualties following an assault that struck residential buildings, an industrial site, and medical facilities across the capital. Rescue crews and police units numbering more than 600 personnel deployed across Kyiv, Brovary, and Boryspil to search through rubble and extinguish fires.
Civilian Infrastructure and Casualties in Kyiv
The overnight bombardment combined various types of ballistic missiles, guided missiles, and uncrewed aerial vehicles designed to inflict maximum disruption on civil infrastructure. In Kyiv, a high-rise skyscraper lost its upper floors, while an ordinary school, a children’s hospital, and a kindergarten sustained heavy damage.

Mayor Vitali Klitschko announced that Friday would be observed as a day of mourning in the Ukrainian capital. City authorities reported at least 12 fatalities within Kyiv proper, while regional officials confirmed an additional person killed in the surrounding area. Approximately 40 individuals sustained injuries, and rescue teams pulled at least one survivor from beneath the collapsed masonry.
Beyond the residential zones, an industrial facility in the Solomianskyi district caught fire after taking a direct hit. Thousands of households lost electricity as energy grids buckled under the sustained barrage. Residents sought shelter from the incoming blasts in underground garages and designated bunkers throughout the city.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that 30 residential buildings, an ordinary school, a children’s hospital, and a kindergarten had been damaged in Kyiv and the region alone.
Regional Impacts Beyond the Capital
The devastation extended far beyond the capital district. In the Odesa region, a Russian drone struck a border crossing point shared with Moldova, while in the Chernihiv region, a separate strike targeted local gas infrastructure. Kalibr-type cruise missiles were detected passing near the town of Kaharlyk as air raid sirens echoed across multiple adjacent provinces.
Meanwhile, the Russian Ministry of Defence acknowledged the large-scale strikes, stating that the operations targeted Ukrainian military capabilities. According to Moscow’s official statements, the attacks hit a facility manufacturing components for uncrewed aerial vehicles, an ammunition depot, a logistics center, and storage facilities located near the Black Sea ports of Chornomorsk and Pivdennyi.
Cross-Border Defense Triggers in NATO Airspace
The scale of the aerial assault prompted immediate military responses from neighboring NATO member states. Polish military authorities activated defense air operations, scrambling fighter jets and putting ground-based air defense systems on high alert to secure national airspace.

At the same time, Romanian radar systems detected airborne targets near the Ukrainian border. Two Spanish fighter jets and a Romanian military helicopter launched under NATO mission protocols after an uncrewed aerial vehicle crossed the frontier. The drone breached Romanian airspace roughly 13 kilometers east of Galați before crashing in an unpopulated area near Tulcea, sparking a minor brush fire that caused no reported injuries or property damage.
Simultaneous Drone Strikes Inside Russia
While Ukrainian cities absorbed nightly bombardments, Russian territory experienced coordinated drone activity. Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin reported that a swarm of 250 uncrewed aerial vehicles targeted the wider Moscow region overnight, with the vast majority intercepted and destroyed at a distance before reaching the capital, while 28 were shot down closer to the urban perimeter.
Both belligerents have intensified long-range strikes in recent months. Kyiv continues its retaliatory campaigns inside Russia to pressure Moscow toward diplomatic negotiations, though peace talks concerning the four-and-a-half-year conflict remain deeply stalled.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy noted that while Moscow invested in ballistic missiles and escalation, such attacks did not always receive the response they deserved from the international community.
The Diplomatic and Military Deadlock
Ukrainian leadership continues to press international partners for urgent shipments of Patriot batteries, arguing that air defense capabilities remain a prerequisite for altering Moscow’s calculation on peace negotiations.
With international reactions falling short of Kyiv’s expectations, according to presidential statements, the immediate trajectory points toward prolonged aerial attrition.
