SYDNEY, January 20. /TASS/. Russian tennis player Anna Kalinskaya beat the 2017 US Open winner, American Sloane Stephens, in the third round match of the Australian Open. The competition takes place in Melbourne.

The meeting ended with a score of 6:7 (8:10), 6:1, 6:4 in favor of the Russian. Both athletes did not receive a seeding number at the tournament. At the end of the match, the fans in the stands sang “Kalinka”. For reaching the quarterfinals, Kalinskaya will play with the winner of the match between compatriot Anna Blinkova (unseeded) and Italian Jasmine Paolini (26).

In the second round, Stevens defeated Russia’s first racket Daria Kasatkina. Kalinskaya became the third Russian woman to reach the fourth round of the tournament. On Friday, Mirra Andreeva and Maria Timofeeva reached this stage of the competition.

Kalinskaya, 25 years old, is ranked 75th in the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) rankings and has never won a singles tournament under the organization’s auspices. Reaching the fourth round of the Australian Open is her best result at a Grand Slam tournament; previously the Russian woman had not advanced beyond the second round at competitions in this category.

Stevens, 30 years old, is ranked 44th in the world and is the winner of seven WTA tournaments. In 2017, the American won the US Open.

The Australian Open is the first Grand Slam tournament of the season and is played on a hard surface. The competition ends on January 28. The prize fund of the tournament is more than $57.8 million. The current winner is Belarusian Arina Sabalenka. Maria Sharapova is the only Russian woman to win the tournament (2008).
