“My future, my reintegration, is in Belgium. Sending me back to France is death,” said Salah Abdeslam before the Brussels Civil Court sitting in summary proceedings. The lawyers of the man who was found guilty of murder and attempted murder in the context of the trial of the attacks of March 22, 2016 in Brussels intend to allow their client to serve his sentence in Belgium on the pretext that his detention in France exposed to inhuman treatment.
Salah Abdeslam fights not to return to France
Invited to speak at the end of the hearing, Salah Abdeslam wanted to share his experience in the French prison of Fleury-Merogis. “Imagine locked up in a 9 m2 cell with the idea of never getting out of it again. Living with that every day is unbearable! That’s why we asked you, Madame the president”, said the thirty-something French. “They watched me 24 hours a day for six years, they stripped me, handcuffed me. I remember this time when a supervisor jumped on my head with his safety shoes… Since I been publicized, it’s hell for me: ‘we can do what we want, it’s Abdeslam’.”
“I have only seen my father five times. My family has spent all their savings to come and see me and if they send me back there, they will no longer be able to come,” finished Salah Abdeslam. “For me, life is a nightmare here or there. But here will be more livable.”
The order concerning the possible return to France of the man will be made within one month.
