The sale of almost all of the Casino super and hypermarkets will affect some “18,000 employees” out of the 50,000 that the group has in France, the company’s union announced on Tuesday. Casino management mentioned a total of 12,248 full-time jobs affected, notably in the 313 stores which could be sold to its competitors Intermarché and Auchan, with which Casino entered into “exclusive negotiations” on Monday.

Management confirmed that 313 stores were affected by the sale: 241 supermarkets, 65 hypermarkets, three Drive sites, one Spar and three Leader Price. A next appointment has been set for January 4, she added. This meeting should make it possible to “establish the social calendar of upcoming deadlines”, specified the inter-union in a press release.

Store sales should take place between “April and June 2024”, according to the inter-union association. “The Casino executive committee and the representatives of the consortium of buyers confirmed to us that everything would be sold, except proximity, Monoprix, Franprix and Cdiscount. Everything else is doomed to disappear, which corresponds to around 18,000 employees,” declared Jean Pastor (CGT), spokesperson for the inter-union, during a meeting with the press organized Tuesday evening in front of the group’s headquarters. in Saint-Étienne.

“An unprecedented social breakdown”

Local stores represent “between 400 and 450 direct jobs attached to headquarters. I think the other 1,200 who work for stores and logistics will leave headquarters,” he added. “There is going to be a fairly significant social breakdown. They didn’t want to tell us formally, but at headquarters,” of the total employees, “two thirds work for the stores. The other third will perhaps be saved because (the local stores) stay with us,” said Nathalie Devienne from the FO union.

“There is going to be an unprecedented social breakdown at headquarters level, where yesterday (Monday) management held staff information meetings to announce the implementation of a PSE (employment protection plan) early January,” noted Jean Pastor. To maintain the pressure, the inter-union called for a national mobilization in Casino warehouses on Friday and in stores on Saturday, a few days before Christmas.
