«Salt Bae» in the spotlight. FIFA investigates disrespectful incidents at World Cup celebrations.

Brazen “Salt Bae” pushes into the limelight after the World Cup final

FIFA is investigating what happened at the closing ceremony of the World Cup in Qatar after Argentina won the title. One person in particular drew displeasure: “Salt Bae”.

The world football association apparently wants to investigate the incidents at the closing ceremony of the World Cup in Qatar after the Argentine team won the title. One person in particular drew displeasure: “Salt Bae”.

FIFA has found that people in the Lusail Stadium have gained unauthorized access to the field, the world association told several media and announced that appropriate internal measures would be taken.

The celebrations of Lionel Messi and Co. after the penalty shoot-out victory against France included a famous restaurant owner with the stage name “Salt Bae” who had taken photos with Argentine players. There are also pictures and videos of how Nusret Gökçe – that’s the real name of the 39-year-old Turk – holding the World Cup trophy.

Without shame he snatched the trophy from the hands of some players and bit into the medals of the pros. Even the otherwise patient Messi was visibly annoyed by the intrusive nature of the influencer, which of course angered many football fans worldwide.

Infantino drops his buddy

The celebrity chef became an internet phenomenon in 2017 with his “salt shaker move” – sticking his elbow in front of his wrist and sprinkling salt on the steak. Since then, “Salt Bae” has been known around the world – almost 50 million followers now follow him on Instagram. There he likes to pose with (the world’s best) footballers to boost his business. The busy businessman has developed an international restaurant chain from his steakhouse.

But not only football players dine in his restaurant, tennis legend Roger Federer and FIFA boss Gianni Infantino have also been guests. Not all stars had a consistently positive experience, however. There was a big shitstorm about the former Bayern professional Franck Ribéry, who came under criticism after eating a gold leaf steak – priced at over 1200 euros. In fact, the hefty prices – neither morally nor culinary – can hardly be justified.

Infantino, who has liked to be photographed with the Turkish “salt shaker” in the past, also distanced himself from “Salt Bea” after the events after the World Cup final. As a Twitter user writes, the Swiss unfollowed him on Instagram.

Cup may only be touched by a select few

Infantino’s distancing may also be due to tactics, as Fifa’s internal rules on handling the World Cup are strict. As stated on the FIFA website: “As one of the most recognizable sporting symbols in the world and a priceless icon, the original World Cup trophy may only be touched and held by a very select group of people, including former World Cup winners and heads of state.”
