Samsung still dominates the smartphone market, far ahead of Apple

The research firm Counterpoint has again shared its data regarding the market shares of smartphone manufacturers around the world, and it is still the Korean giant Samsung which dominates.

A few weeks ago, Canalys shared an account of the situation of the smartphone market in the third quarter of 2022and it is now up to its colleague Counterpoint to clarify the data by revealing which of the smartphone manufacturers did best in terms of sales.

Unsurprisingly, the figures show that Samsung still dominates with a 21% market share. This is also up compared to the same quarter last year (20%). In total, in the third quarter of 2022, Samsung sold 64.3 million smartphones. That’s down from 69.3 million a year ago, but Canalys had reported a 9% drop in phone sales over that period in 2022. Earlier this year, we reported that Samsung found itself with 50 million smartphones on its hands after seeing its popularity decline.

Apple ranks second among smartphone makers

With 49.3 million devices sold in Q3 2022, up from 48 million a year ago, Apple is the only smartphone maker to see sales increase year over year. This is probably due to the significant success of the iPhone 14 Pro, even if the American giant has extremely difficult to sell its iPhone 14 and 14 Plus. Its market share thus fell from 14% in the third quarter of 2021 to 16% in the last quarter.

In third position, we obviously find Xiaomi, who manages to save the furniture. Its market share is stagnating at 13% year-on-year, but its sales have fallen in 2022. It shipped just 40.5 million devices in the third quarter, down from 44.4 in the same period a year earlier.

Finally, we note that Oppo, Vivo and the others have all seen their sales and market shares drop significantly in 2022, in particular because of Apple’s excellent results. Moreover, Counterpoint points out that smartphone sales were down 12% from a year earlieralthough it increased by 2% compared to the second quarter of 2022 to reach 301.9 million units.
