“You have to love to love to sweat, to take pains, to hurt yourself…” Samuel Desbuisson is 42 years old. He lives in Parcé, near Fougères (Ille-et-Vilaine). And he will participate in the 2024 Dakar.

A childhood dream, rekindled after a 20-year break from motor sports.

Back to basics

Samuel entered this world at 16, with motocross. But at 22, he stopped everything. “When your family life begins, you make choices. You cut your long hair, you stop certain things to think about your house, your children,” says the agricultural mechanic, without any regret.

But that was without counting on these same children, two boys who, growing up, “wanted to taste that”.

“That” is the passion that the father of the family kept deep within him. “As soon as there’s mud, noise, dust, I love it,” he says, stars in his eyes.

Now or never

“I told myself that it was now or never to get back into it,” he smiles. “But this time, I was going to do it thoroughly. » So two years ago, he tried the quad. It’s a revelation.

“It’s a lot more physical than motorcycling, but I like the challenge,” he says with a burst of laughter. From now on, he does sports every evening: running, cycling… It doesn’t matter. The objective is to work on breathing and endurance.

“I finish work at 6 p.m. I get home at 8, 8:30 p.m..”

And on the weekend, Samuel goes to train at moto-club d’Iffendic, to the west of the department. “The one where I got my motocross license when I was young. »

His determination paid off: he finished 5th in the World Rally Raid Championship (W2RC), in Morocco, in 2022, and 6th this year.

And Samuel Desbuisson can now count on the support of the greatest. He integrated the Drag’On stablesponsored by Axel Dutrie.

As for his quad, he completely rebuilt it, ran it in a field lent to him by a farmer, wore it out in Morocco, and reprepared it for two weeks for the big departure. From now on, this Yamaha is in the hands of the organizers. “He leaves Barcelona on November 30, heading to Saudi Arabia. »

8,000 km in the desert

It is there that the legendary race will take place. 8,000 km in the middle of the desert. 15 intense days. 778 competitors on the starting line, including 10 quad pilots. But for Samuel, the ranking doesn’t matter. “It’s not my job. I just want to finish the race. »

And for that, many of them believe in him: his family, of course, but also his sponsors: Drag’On, L’Épicerie de JP (Billé), Motin-Normagri, Agriest and Planet Yam.

So, come from January 5 to 19 to see him take on the dunes.
