“Sarmat” as a symbol of the crisis in Russian rocket production

Oleksandr Kovalenko

Lots of questions about Sarmat.

Nothing changes in the wild swamp. Just as they threatened the entire civilized world with nuclear weapons, they continue to threaten them. But it’s one thing to threaten what exists, and quite another to threaten something that raises a number of unambiguous questions… “Sarmat”.

In 2022, the still cheerful and perky Dmitry Rogozin threatened the West with the latest Sarmat intercontinental ballistic missile, which, in fact, did not exist.

How is it possible, the adherents of “Sarmat” will exclaim, because on April 20, 2022, the first successful test launch of a rocket was carried out from the Plesetsk cosmodrome. That’s right, the first and only…

The funny thing is, just after one single test launch on August 16, 2022, a state contract was signed for the production and supply of Sarmat ICBMs to Russian troops.

In this case, it should be understood that the Sarmat is a very crude and very problematic missile. For example, the first throw tests of the Sarmat ICBM, which were planned for 2016, were carried out only in 2018, and resumed after a long pause in 2020.

These delays were caused by a large number of technical and technological problems that arose during the creation and preparation of the rocket for testing.

Not meeting the deadlines for providing the Avangard complexes with Sarmat missiles, it was decided to install the latter on the old Soviet UR-100N UTTH ICBMs, not produced since 1985, until 2027. According to the supply plan, 12 Avangards will be delivered to the troops from 2019 to 2027.

But the main thing is not the technical and technological capabilities of the Russians to produce Sarmat missiles, but the fact that, according to all the requirements, they cannot put them into operation after several years of solving problems and only one successful test launch.

For example, in the USSR, missiles of this type were tested for several years before their mass production began, and dozens of test launches were carried out.

It is obvious that Russia is rushing things and strives to transfer to the troops as quickly as possible what is called the Sarmat intercontinental ballistic missile, which has no analogues in the world. But so far she has only managed to embarrass herself on this rocket, demonstrating not only her production helplessness, but also her total recklessness. After all, a missile that has not passed all stages of testing and will have to carry a nuclear warhead is like a time bomb, dangerous primarily for its creators.
