Satellite imagery has revealed the catastrophic scale of the Nepal-Tibet flash floods, capturing entire border structures and river corridors completely erased by rushing water. According to preliminary findings by scientists, the deadly disaster may have been triggered by a massive glacier fragment breaking off and temporarily blocking a river, allowing water to build up before surging downstream with tremendous force.
Satellite Evidence Details Destruction Along the Trishuli River
Shocking catastrophic images from Vantor Satellite Imagery show the extraordinary scale of destruction along a roughly 10-mile swath of the Trishuli River stretching south from the northern border with China. Visuals comparing the Rasuwagadhi border post on the Nepal-China border on April 19, 2024, with post-flood scenes show that the entire structure was washed out, leaving hardly any evidence of what once existed at the crossing.
Casualties and Missing Persons Across Multiple Nations
The devastating flooding has claimed at least 469 lives and left over 1,468 people missing, destroying villages, roads, and hydropower infrastructure in its path. Nepal’s disaster management authority reported that the domestic death toll has risen to 359, with 910 people—including 517 foreign nationals—still missing, while 50 foreigners have been rescued by air.
The disaster has impacted people from more than 30 countries, including hundreds of foreign tourists and Hindu pilgrims traveling to the sacred Mt. Kailash region in Tibet. China’s state media reported at least three deaths and 558 missing in Gyirong County, Tibet. Chinese state broadcaster CCTV noted that 260 of those 558 missing individuals were foreigners, and China’s foreign ministry stated that nearly 100 Chinese citizens were missing on the Nepal side.
International Dispatches and Unaccounted Nationals
Foreign governments continue to track citizens caught in the disaster zone. India’s External Affairs Ministry stated that 288 Indian nationals remain uncontactable, a figure that includes 73 individuals working on a power project. Nepali officials noted that many Indian tourists were undertaking pilgrimages to Mount Kailash in Tibet, a site sacred to Hindus. Meanwhile, the US State Department reported that 90 Americans were unaccounted for in China and Nepal, though it was not aware of any U.S. deaths and confirmed that three Americans have been rescued.
