Saturday night palsy is a neuropathy caused by prolonged crushing of the radial nerve, which originates in the cervical spine and travels down the arm. It is responsible for the movements of the arm but also those of the wrist and fingers, as well as the transfer of sensory information captured by this part of the body.
When the radial nerve is compressed, such as when you fall asleep with your head resting on your triceps, for example, it can no longer innervate the arm muscles properly. This results in a feeling of numbness, paralysis, in the whole arm with a typical position of the wrist: le wrist drop. The patient has a constantly tilted wrist and cannot move it.
If the symptoms of the Saturday evening paralysis are impressive and debilitating, they are fortunately temporary and can be treated with rehabilitation exercises and anti-inflammatories to relieve the pain if necessary. Of course, doctors recommend avoiding sleeping on your arm, a problem that also affects passionate lovers since “Saturday night paralysis” is also nicknamed “honeymoon paralysis”.
