The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia filed an official complaint with the United Nations against the United Arab Emirates, against the backdrop of the Emirate of Abu Dhabi declaring the Al Yasat area a protected marine area.
Saudi Arabia affirmed in its memorandum submitted to the United Nations that this declaration “is not recognized, recognized, or has any legal effect.”

The Kingdom stressed its adherence to all its rights and interests in the region, in accordance with the agreement concluded between the two countries in 1974.
This agreement is considered binding for the two countries in accordance with international law, and therefore Saudi Arabia “does not recognize any actions or practices taken or their consequences by the UAE government in the area off the Saudi coast, including the Kingdom’s territorial sea, the area of joint sovereignty, and on the islands of Makasib and Al-Qafai.”
This Saudi step comes within the framework of its efforts to protect its rights and sovereignty over its lands and territorial waters, and to enhance respect for international law and the principles of good neighborliness.
