SAV urges early detection for prostate cancer in Venezuela

The international initiative urges men to overcome cultural barriers and prioritize preventative screenings. Unlike global trends where prostate pathology typically claims second place in male cancer frequency, it sits at the very top of Venezuela’s epidemiological burden.

Prostate and Testicular Cancer Statistics in Venezuela

Prostate cancer accounts for 10,087 new diagnoses, averaging 28 cases per day, and 4,585 annual deaths, or 13 daily fatalities. Lung cancer follows as the second leading cause of male cancer death, with 3,026 annual deaths from 3,574 diagnoses. Colorectal cancer registers 3,440 cases and 1,491 deaths yearly, while stomach cancer records 1,937 cases and 1,234 deaths.

Catching Prostate or Testicular Malignancies Early Pushes Survival Rates Above Eighty Percent

  • Early Detection: Catching prostate or testicular malignancies in initial stages I and II pushes survival rates above 80% to 90%.
  • Screening Protocols: Men aged 45 and older—or 40 with a family history of first-degree relatives—require annual urological evaluations, including Prostate-Specific Antigen (PSA) blood testing.
  • Testicular Health: Testicular cancer represents the most frequent solid tumor in young men aged 15 to 35, carrying a cure rate exceeding 95% when identified early via monthly self-examinations.

Dr. Juan Saavedra, communications and institutional relations manager for the SAV, emphasized that the crisis demands proactive optimism rather than despair. He noted that early detection remains the key to achieving a cure. The data stems from the 2026 oncological estimates compiled by the SAV in collaboration with the Simón Bolívar University and CESMA.

Testicular malignancies, while prevalent among younger demographics, respond exceptionally well to prompt clinical management. Meanwhile, penile cancer remains relatively rare but carries high functional and psychological consequences. It is frequently associated with modifiable risk factors such as human papillomavirus (HPV) infection, poor hygiene, and tobacco use.

Pathology Annual Diagnoses Annual Deaths Daily Impact
Prostate Cancer 10,087 4,585 28 cases / 13 deaths
Lung Cancer 3,574 3,026 10 cases / 8 deaths
Colorectal Cancer 3,440 1,491 10 cases / 4 deaths
Stomach Cancer 1,937 1,234 5 cases / 3 deaths

To combat these statistics, the SAV operates its Cancer Prevention Clinic. The facility houses 60 specialists across 20 medical disciplines, offering diagnostic biopsies, laboratory testing, and endoscopic evaluations. Routine urological appointments can be scheduled through the organization’s dedicated telephone lines and messaging services.

SAV Recommends Annual Urological Evaluation and Preventive Colonoscopies

The SAV recommends an annual urological evaluation for men aged 45 and over, or from age 40 for those with a first-degree family history, combining total and free PSA laboratory testing with a consultation through the institution’s urology team. It also advises preventive colonoscopies and gastroscopies from age 45 to identify and remove premalignant lesions before they progress. Monthly testicular self-examinations are recommended to detect nodules, hardening, or changes in size early, and early diagnosis of penile cancer helps avoid invasive surgical procedures and preserves the patient’s quality of life.

“Sabemos que hablar de chequeos puede generar dudas, pero cuidarse es un acto de valentía y responsabilidad con uno mismo y con la familia. Rompe el mito: la prevención no resta virilidad, suma años a tu vida,” Saavedra stated.
