The National Institute of Health has ruled out the possibility of an outbreak of chickenpox in the municipality of Uribia, located in La Guajira. After 24 students and 8 teachers at the Kuisa boarding school developed skin rashes, medical evaluations were carried out, confirming that the clinical pictures were not chickenpox, but scabies and influenza.

Scabies is a disease that causes an intensely itchy rash and the formation of blisters similar to chickenpox. In addition to skin symptoms, affected people manifested fever, headache, and other complaints similar to those caused by chickenpox.

Faced with this situation, health professionals have activated the corresponding alerts, and a commission of experts has been sent to Kuisa to control the situation. The hospitals of Nazareth and that of Our Lady of Perpetual Help will be responsible for providing the necessary medical care and treatment.

From the department’s Public Health Surveillance area, communication has been established with the municipality of Uribia to verify and corroborate the rumors. The Ministry of Health of the municipality has informed that coordination has begun with the rector of the institution to carry out the respective activities, which include an epidemiological field investigation to determine the total number of cases presented, the number of people exposed, conducting active searches in the community and the necessary mitigation and control actions.
