After a plane crash in early May that killed their mother, four Colombian children survived in the jungle for weeks. Now the family man is making headlines. He is accused of sexually abusing the oldest girl in the group – his stepdaughter – for years.
Two months after four children were rescued from the Colombian rainforest after a plane crash, the children’s father has been arrested and charged with suspected abuse. The man is accused of sexually abusing his older stepdaughter Lesly since the age of 10, the Florencia city prosecutor said. The 47-year-old was arrested on Friday and should remain in custody for the time being. He is the biological father of the two youngest of the four children who survived for weeks in the jungle and stepfather to the two older ones.
The children of the indigenous Huitoto people survived alone in the Amazon rainforest in southern Colombia for 40 days after a plane crash in early May. The pilot and the children’s mother died in the accident. The children, aged between one and 13 at the time, struggled alone through the dangerous jungle for weeks before they were found in early June.
A dispute over custody has broken out
The eldest, Lesly, took care of her siblings after the accident and led them through the jungle – so played a special role. After their rescue, the four completely emaciated children were nursed in a hospital for a month. In the days after the rescue, the father reported to numerous media, including internationally, how the rescue went and how he is now dealing with the children.
After the rescue, there was a dispute over custody of the children between the maternal grandparents and the father of the two youngest children, who has now been arrested. The children are therefore housed in a home for the time being.
