SCCPQ’s 70th Anniversary Gala: Celebrating Quebec’s Culinary Excellence

The Society of Chefs, Cooks and Pastry Chefs of Quebec (SCCPQ) wanted to do things big for their 70th anniversary. “Being at the Château Frontenac ballroom for the gala, we wanted to hit hard,” says Sébastien Bonnefis, vice-president of the eastern region of the SCCPQ. On Monday, guests were able to taste the 100% Quebec dish concocted by the man who will be crowned chef of the year at the end of the evening.

Since 2016, Frédéric Cyr has headed the culinary program at the Fairmont Le Château Frontenac, after having been in charge of the kitchens of luxury cruise ships, then those of the Radisson Blu hotel located in Cebu in the Philippines. Following in the footsteps of his father, Renaud Cyr, who was at the head of a renowned inn-restaurant in Montmagny, Mr. Cyr now puts regional products from Quebec at the heart of his gastronomy.

Alongside him, pastry chef Joël Lahon from Fairmont Le Château Frontenac walked away with the Max-Rupp prize. This distinction recognizes his volunteer commitment within the SCCPQ.

The Fairmont Le Château Frontenac is not the only establishment in Quebec to receive honors. Pastry chef of the La Tanière Group, Jérémy Billet received the title of pastry chef and chocolatier of the year. His know-how had already been noted by the SCCPQ in 2019, when he won the Pastry Chef Prize.

Excellence in healthy gastronomy was recognized by Maxime Philips, owner of the restaurant La Belle Verte located in Gatineau. The one who knew how to introduce the principles of a healthy and vegetarian diet left with the title of health chef of the year.

In addition to the approximately 500 members of SCCPQ, the general public was invited to vote for the three categories of chefs of the year.
