Good Move Schaerbeek: no new plan between now and the elections, the hot potato sent to the next majority
Following the publication of the report of the citizen panel which looked into the future of the Good Move plan at the Cage aux Ours, the impeded mayor declared: “We have to be realistic: I think there is not enough left time under this legislature to deepen the scenarios and visions in order to transform them into actionable plans. I propose that the important work that has been done here be passed on to the next majority, which will be established after the October 2024 elections.”
Undrinkable and premature comments in the eyes of the leader of the Schaerbeek Greens. “A lot of work has been done by citizens. We cannot brush this aside and do nothing about it until the next election. When we listen to citizens, no one is for the status quo.”
Involve the opposition
As a reminder, the implementation of a Good Move traffic plan in the Cage aux Ours district last year aroused strong opposition. As soon as the no-entrance signs were installed, demonstrations followed one another, going as far as damaging street furniture. In the process, the municipality finally reversed course and decided to launch a consultation process, the report of which was just published this Thursday.

Given the stakes and the recent loss of majority, the First Alderman calls for the matter to be brought before the municipal council, where the majority and opposition sit as a reminder. “The entire council must be able to hear the panelists, and not just the college.” Hoping for a new plan before the election? “I’m not saying that we can find a new plan right away,” acknowledges the alderman, who nevertheless mentions possible small measures possible between now and then.
