Just in time for the start of school, the “Lungauer Nachrichten” asked the principals at the secondary schools in the district.

The Tamsweg Commercial Academy is pleased to have an additional school class. There will be eleven classes in the 2023/24 school year. HAK director Herbert Giegerl in the LN interview: “We attribute this to good, qualitative and solid work. Our philosophy is: The focus is on the students as well as a young and motivated team of teachers including experienced professional colleagues. We cover this with our wide range of training options the future social challenges.”

An additional class at the Tamsweg Commercial Academy

Since Monday, around 200 students have been taught at the HAK. “Our increase compared to the previous year is twelve percent. We are proud that our student numbers are moving against the demographically predicted trend.”

For some students, a top-class program awaits right at the start of school: “On Thursday, the director of the Federal Criminal Police Office, Andreas Holzer, a native of Mariapfarr, will be a guest at our school. On Friday, the Federal Minister for the EU and the Constitution, Karoline Edtstadler, will be here. Through We are pioneers in Austria in our areas of training. Experts from politics and business will also be guests during the school year. Our work is now paying off and motivates us for future tasks.” The students now come from six different federal states. “We are seeing a lot of interest, especially in the areas of cybersecurity and sustainability,” says the 60-year-old.

Four new, young teachers at BG Tamsweg

Most students in the district are educated at the Tamsweg Federal High School. Director Klaus Heitzmann: “Four young teachers from Lungau and neighboring Styria are starting with us this year. Our school is designed for eight years. After the fourth grade, the course will be set again.” For some students, it started in the last week of the holidays: “Third-grade students experienced a four-day intensive English course. There was also a 16-hour first aid course for fourth-grade students. This has now become an educational goal of the new curriculum and will be handled by the Lungau Red Cross.” The headmaster is particularly proud of his students’ regular successes in pre-scientific work that takes place as part of Austria-wide competitions. There are currently ten award winners.

A long era will soon come to an end at the “Multi”.

A new era officially begins at the Multiaugustinum in St. Margarethen on November 1st. Director Klaus Mittendorfer (64) ran the school for exactly 25 years. It was the transition from a small village school to one of the most modern schools in Austria. “We have taken the step into the 21st century together. I dare say that we have always been and are at the forefront educationally and technically. Educational aspects have always been important to me personally.” Her successor will be Edith Pirkner (44) from St. Georgen ob Murau, who worked at the school two years ago.

“Last year she was employed at the Tamsweg Agricultural College. At the beginning of the year she was selected by the Archdiocese of Salzburg to take over the management. Since Monday we have been working on the handover step by step.” St. Michaeler has been particularly successful in the areas of multimedia, culinary arts and, most recently, nursing training in St. Margarethen. “It was a lot of work, but it was meaningful work. I was able to work with people and I had the privilege of giving young people something for life.”

New student record at LFS Tamsweg

The Tamsweg Agricultural Technical School has recorded a new high number of students. LFS director Mathias Gappmaier: “Last year we taught 148 students. This year there are 156, twelve of them girls. Eight girls start in the first class, which has never happened before.”

Despite the expansions and modernizations of the boarding school over the last ten years, new capacity had to be created again this summer: “We created new boarding places in the farmhouse at Standlhof during the summer holidays.”

There are currently 24 teachers teaching at the Tamsweg Agricultural College. The total number of employees is 44 people. “We’re all looking forward to the start of school. It’s finally starting again.”

Hardly any staffing gaps in the school system in Lungau

Josef Thurner, school quality manager in the southern education region for Lungau and Ennspongau, in the LN phone call: “In terms of the personnel situation, there are fortunately hardly any gaps compared to other regions in Lungau. We can start the new 2023/24 school year solidly and start well.”

By the way: There are 2,660 students in Lungau, 188 of whom are school students.
