Scoliosis in children.. a health condition that requires early detection

Scoliosis, or curvature of the spine, is a health condition that seems to be noticed more today than ever before. The reason is awareness of its diagnosis and the importance of early treatment.

This condition, which is linked to many factors, may be painful for the child at a stage in their life, as it hinders their movement and disturbs them while performing various activities. It also changes the shape of their bodies, which negatively affects their mental and physical health as a whole.

And scoliosis, which tends to be dangerous and severe over time, requires surgery, as braces or other orthodontic treatments may not work for him.

It is worth noting that the early detection of this condition and its diagnosis by correct medical means enhances the chances of successful treatment and protects children from complications of severe curvature of the spine, which may negatively affect digestion and breathing, and the rest of the joints and other organs of the body.

In this context, Dr. Zaid Al-Obaidi, a pediatric orthopedics consultant, told Sky News Arabia:

  • Early detection is one of the most important things we encourage in this case.
  • Scoliosis has several types, but we will focus on the most common, which is scoliosis of unknown cause, which affects children aged 10 years.
  • 2 to 3 percent of children ages 10 to 13 can develop scoliosis.
  • Treatment depends on the orthodontic device or surgical intervention in advanced degrees.
