The national council of the Hollywood Screen Actors Guild (SAG-AFTRA) announced Friday that its members will vote on whether they are willing to extend your strike to the video game industry in the event that the negotiations that are undertaken on September 26 with the businessmen of the sector are not satisfactory.

The union’s president, Fran Drescher, said in a statement that talks for a new agreement were at a “stalemate” and that the strike authorization vote was necessary to obtain progress in terms of wage increases and protection against artificial intelligence.

What will the Screen Actors Guild decide?

The unanimous decision comes nearly a year after the union’s Interactive Media Agreement was extended “beyond” its expiration date, to allow for new discussions regarding terms critical to its members’ needs.

“Once again we are faced with greed and disrespect from employers,” said Drescher, who emphasized the danger that artificial intelligence represented for the work of its members.

“Without contractual protections, employers are asking actors to unknowingly participate in the extinction of their art and livelihoods,” union chief negotiator Duncan Crabtree-Ireland said in the same document.

The members will vote from September 5 to 25 to authorize a strike, which means that if they have a majority, the SAG-AFTRA national council could declare a work stoppage in the event that video game companies do not “bargain fairly.”

Among the companies that would be affected by a stoppage are Epic Games (“Fortnite“), Disney Character Voices Inc., “Blindlight” (“Halo”), “WB Games Inc.” (“Mortal Kombat 11”), and six other companies.

Currently, the interpreters’ union has been on strike since July 14 after failing to reach an agreement with the Alliance of Film and Television Producers (AMPTP) for the realization of an agreement that includes television, cinema and the ” streaming”.

SAG-AFTRA calls for the same salary increases for video game performers as for film and television actors, “an 11% retroactive increase and 4% increases in the second and third years of the agreement.”
